Representation through Music Videos.

Voyeurism- Freud:erotic pleasure can be gained by looking at a sexual object (preferably when the object is unaware of being watched).

Katy Perrys' Roar is a good example of voyeurism, although Perry is doing nothing of a sexual nature, climbing and exploring through a jungle, men are still watching her in a sexual type way, depriving fanataties from the situation, while Perry is unaware of the attention.

Exhibitionism - Female performers being at once sexually provocative and apparently in control of and inviting a sexualised gaze in what could be termed as the opposite of voyeurism.

Male Gaze- Laura Mulvey 1975 proposed that because filmmakers are predominantly male the presence of women is often for the purposes of display (rather than narrative). This is to facilitate a voyeuristic response in spectators, which presumes a male gaze (regardless of the gender of spectator) one that is or may feel like a powerful controlling gaze at the female on display who is effectively objectified and passive. In male performance videos the voyeuristic treatment of the female body is often apparent, with the use of dancers as adornments to the male star ego.

Rihanna is a great example of an exhibitionist, she is sexually provocative by wearing a small silver fabric covering her boobs and ripped demin shorts that may not as well be there, she seems to be in complete control of the male sexual gaze. By Rihanna touching her body as well as the dancers themselves dancing provocatively the video is a great example of male gaze.

Female Gaze is the opposite to male gaze this is when the men seem to be objectified or over sexualised, a great example of this is Madonna's Girls Gone Wild. (Homosexuality)

The over sexualsiation of the Men of Madonna's video is rare, woman are more subjectified to gaze then men, this is also a great example for homosexuality, you have the two men sharing an apple, although there is nothing overally sexual about it the way it has been produced makes the act very sexual along with the men dancing in high hills also shows the female gaze.

Strong female

Avril Lavigne is a great example of a strong female, she go against the norms of a 20th centuray female pop star, shes the dying make of pop stars that don't dress sexually but dress to represent her music and videos such as smile shows that you don't have to dress sexually to get the message across.

Interpretation of a Song.

In class today we listen to a song we then had to interpret how we would turn it into a music video, below is a list of everyone ideas.

1)Relationships
- Wedding
-Photos of the couple as singletons
-backward time line leading to divorce

     2)Old peasant

-Searching for gold
-Chased by guards and solders
-All for love

3)Singer walking away from camera along road in Spanish village
-Goes to Beach
-Flashback of relationships
-Girl enters and lays next to singer

4)Slow paced man singing on his own

5)Urban London pavements
-close up on man singing walking slowly whilst everything else moves quickly around him
-Walks past window and sees ex with new lover
-Bangs on window but she cannot hear

       6)Man walking through maze/thorns
-Band sing in live preformance/journey

7)Man walking as body parts slowly fall off until there is just a pile of ash
-Surrounding public do not notice

8)Close up of vocals face, sky as background
-Zoom out and see him and band floating in the sky
-Camera follows him
-Woman floats by, he tries but cannot reach her

9)Black and white image of vocalist, close up, dark background
-Cuts to woman walking down the isle
-As beat kicks in the image turns to colour and all band mates are seen
-Cuts to woman running from woman, leaving man behind her
-Man singing in tattered wedding suit.

10)Shots from different substitutions of people in various stage of relationship
-End with a break up

   11)Man walking through house
-Looking at old photos of the couple
-Starts breaking things.

I have learnt that each person interprets music lyrics and it is the video itself that tell us collectively how we should feel (if the video has narrative to the lyrics)

My favourite idea is number 8, purely on the basis that it is very different and quirky.

Analyzing Three Music Videos

Ed Sheerans Video Lego House does not have an obvious link to the lyrics themselves however the video shows this boy (Rupurt Grint) is obsessed with Ed sheeran and therfore we can link the lyrics to the video because Sheerasn music may have helped the boy through a tough time.

The Black Veil Brides 'Fallen Angels' is an obvious link between the lyrics and video. As the lyrics come 'we are the fallen angels' astros come from the sky and different people emerge from the rocks, the genre of this type of music is very dark and is seen as 'emo music'.

Lady Gaga's Telphone ft. Beyonce is an fantastic example of voyerism/male gaze , the video openly invties people to stare and lust after the woman, from their great bodies, revealing dress sense and Gaga making a sandwich there is nothing a man wouldnt want when watching this video, it shows the man that all this is acheavable in thier womam. It will also create a low self worth in young girls after seeing the video because they are 'perfect' like beyonce and Gaga, although it shows them as strong women it mainly shows them as a mans sex object.

Andrew Goodwins Theory. 12/06/14

Six Conventions:

1) Relationships between lyrics and visual (visuals illustrates/amplifies music. Or contradicts)

2)Relationship between music visuals.

3)Particular music video genre with their own music style/iconography.

4)Close up of main actors/vocals

5)Voyeurism-subjective of woman(looking). (Screen within screen)

6)Inter-textual references (Billie Jean)

Star image is a key aspect in music videos.Lady GaGa can go from extreme to "natural".
